English Translation:
During the Spring and Autumn period, Yue was defeated by Wu. King Gou Jian of Yue was forced to serve as a servant in Wu. Every day he slept on firewood and tasted bitter gall before meals, to remind himself never to forget the shame of his fallen nation. After years of effort, Yue finally defeated Wu.
