Culture Tip: Number Superstitions

In Chinese culture, certain numbers are considered lucky or unlucky. The number 8 is considered very lucky because it sounds similar to the word for "wealth" (发 fā). The number 6 is also lucky as it sounds like "smooth" (顺 shùn). However, the number 4 is considered unlucky because it sounds similar to the word for "death" (死 sǐ).

When giving gifts or choosing phone numbers, many Chinese people prefer numbers that include 8 and avoid 4. For example, a phone number ending with 888 is considered very lucky and may be more expensive.
